Through this project I have explored how the inner characteristics of a person express themselves physically, be that as clothing or through ones actions.

I felt that in appropriating Andy Warhols grid-like portrait system this would allow me to convey each unique identity as belonging to one individual. However, unlike Warhols bright hues I have chosen to sketch each photograph by hand and to display them inversely, so that what is seen is a white sketch on a black canvas. Sketching and stencil art are both a part of my identity though more importantly is that the single lines are like the bare bones upon which the body and personality is layered and constructed.

The twelve photos that I have used are very successful in that to a stranger they appear to be twelve separate people, while in fact they are all of me.

This is my identity, I am not merely a student nor am I solely a guitarist, I poses both and other characteristics that together make me who I am today, this is my identity and it is forever changing.

Dr. Professor. Perhaps it has strayed somewhat from my initial concept of schizophrenia though there remain to be some clear analogies. The main one being that I am still depicting different persona within the same person, me.

What I was exploring in this project is how the inner characteristics of a person express themselves in a physical expression i.e. the clothes and actions of a person.

I feel that the twelve photos that I have used do a great job of showing me as a different person / persona, and if you were unaware that they were all of the same person it would be very different to say they were fictional.

This is my identity, I am not merely a student nor am I solely a guitarist, I poses both and other characteristics that together make me who I am today, this is my identity and it is forever changing.

Finally!!!

Ok, So at long Last I have finished the design and construction of my website.
I have chosen to mimic Warhols grid-like design of portrait panels though instead of using the bright hues that he uses I have sketched each portrait. What I have tried to achieve through these photos is a means of expressing that one person can in fact be different depending on the time and the place.

Some of these photos were taken a couple years ago (as you can probably tell by the short hair) while others were taken within the past few days. I was one person two years ago and since then I have changed though there are numerous characteristics of my identity that remain. For example, two years ago I was a Yeshiva student in Israel though at the same time I liked art and drew constantly, two years later I am an architecture student in Sydney Australia and still like art and draw constantly (though now it is more often on CAD). Was I really in the Army or is that simply a photoshoped image? Am I a builder? no though I do like carpentry and making things. Do I like sport? yes I do like sport, I play tennis and I surf and I have for at least the past ten years. No, I am not Jesus, No I am not a chauffer and No I am not a woman!!! Breaking away from what has been expected of someone has the potential to set one free though similarly fall apart. Likewise, is it these strings that hold a person and their numerous personas together? Is a person controlled like a puppet or do they really have free choice to behave as they please?

So, is life really preferable without strings attached? Most probably not, though in toying with this concept I have began considering making a website in which a person can input who they are so that at a later stage when perhaps they suffer from alzheimer's disease they can simply log in and find out who they are.

A process called snoezelen which is an emotion-oriented psychosocial intervention for sufferers of dementia aids in the recollection of lost memories.

Many popular Hollywood films have focussed on the idea of amnesia as a theme; the Jason Bourne trilogy, Eternal Sunshine off the Spotless Mind, 50 First Dates and Memento to name a few. There is always a need to find a way to deal with their memory loss, from watching a short video each morning in 50 First Dates to tatooing notes onto oneself in Memento. Though now I am proposing a new option, a website about yourself.

possible screens

Cubism

What kind of art or which artist for that matter best represents multiple personalities within the same person. Can the computer itself have an identity? and what does it take to give a computer an identity? is it merely that we form a connection to it? that we identify with it as being unique from other computers? or perhaps that it is conscious? What would it take for a computer to be conscious and have free choice? Is it even possible for a computer to have free choice? after all the algorithim or perhaps living cells that would give it the ability to progress and advance with its decisions would have been created by a human, so does that free choice not stem from somewhere?

Ok, so perhaps it does but that dosen't mean that the computer is not't thinking for itself. Are we thinking for ourselves? or is everything predetermined? Is what I am writing at this very moment predetermined? the speed at which i write it? the time of which I upload it? the time when you read it? what you think of it? the mark that I will ultimately receive for it? Did I actually have any control over what mark I receive for this blog?

This concept is different to that of living in a computer simulation, or is it?

Perspective.

Is it a persons identity that determines a perspective or the a persons perspective that determines the identity?

How is it that one identity can be viewed in so many different ways when really it is the same thing? Everyone sees a person in their own unique way for example, a religious person may be considered secular to an ultra orthodox person while to a secular person he is considered ultra orthodox. A car thief to a judge and the owner of the car might be considered a criminal though in comparison to a pedefile or a rapist he is a saint.

Perspective is an approximate representation on a 2d plane of an image as it is perceived by the eye. There are a few paths that I am considering taking for this project each reflecting different though similar takes on the theme identity.

The first idea that I have written about in my posts is that of Schizophrenia or rather having multiple personalities, those which are on the internet and those that are not and whether or not there really is a difference between the two.

Another take on the theme is that which revolves around religion and ones belief in G-d. Is there free choice? Are people navigating through this site by choice and making their own informed decisions as to which page to lead to or is it all perhaps predetermined? Perhaps in having a site that on the navigation itself could pose these questions.

Another take is that of the Matrix, one would enter the computer which would lead into a virtual reality which appears to be reality though they are still online.

So as you can see I am still searching for a path to take. What if what I focus on is 'searching'? or maybe I will just stick with what I have been doing until now.

'To work with the medium, you need to work within the medium' - Gianni.
Ok, enough writing, time to begin with the medium!!!

Web Site Theme:

Hi, so since Wednesday I've been working on a website layout. Through this layout I am trying to convey the multiple personalities and the distinction between them. I'm trying to do this by having contrasting styles, one dark and gloomy while the other is bright and happy. Also with the freedom to animate in both Photoshop and Flash I can better explore this theme through movement and how the moments create a feeling, be that sharp and abrupt movements in contrast to gentle bouncing movements, reminiscent to a child jumping.

Anyway, I'll post the link here to the file of this website I am working on:
http://www.box.net/shared/r52pvr55t8

Hope you like it.

2nd Life

I've been watching a film that I took out of the library a few days ago, "You Only Live Twice", and no this is not a Bond film. So what is this? It's a film about the online virtual reality world 'Second Life', a place in which people can interact with other people, convert US money into Linden (the currency of Second Life) and visa versa. It is a place in which some aim to make a profit while others do it for the social interaction, some buy virtual real estate while others have virtual sex, it is a place where everything is transparent and everything can be seen. It is with this philosophy that they hope to avoid introducing rules and laws. Though despite this, rules have been introduced, rules to prevent rape and child sex offences despite them being virtual.

Julian Dibbell the author of 'Play Money', wrote: "People pay real money for these imagenery things because they have real investments, social, pshycological investments in these fake things and that's what's real".

There is an interesting similarity between ones real world and ones virtual world and where they merge creating a persons identity which is formed by both of these worlds.

No Strings Attached.

For the past 30 minutes we've been working on our own, though I really should have continued working work masking and layers and all of the other GREAT things that photoshop has I took what for me was the easier and more enjoyable option, I drew. There was a tablet with a pen on my desk so I plugged it into my computer and began drawing. They really are pretty cool things, this one was pretty basic, very small and didn't have any pressure sensitivity though regardless of this it was still good fun and I'm pretty happy with what came out. I've had this idea for a while, that of a person running away from their puppeteer and breaking the strings that until now were holding them back and restraining them.

The profile of the face was just a quick sketch, the eyes pretty bad, maybe its for the obvious reason that the eye isn't really drawn in profile.

Beatle.

I know that this post is above the other two though really I made this image after the other two. Why I found this so interesting is because it has the potential to merge images in a sphere and in essence create a 3d room which can be navigated in Flash.

This image was created by joining a few separate photographs which as you can see has now come together to form one single image.

Basic Masking:

Ok, so at the moment I am actually in class, we are having a break so I figured what better time than now to upload some of the images that we have made today and write a bit about them.

Today we have focused on masking and how to blend images together.
The following two images were the ones we were given. One website that I found particularly interesting was Maya Escobars website. Not only was this site well designed but it dealt with ideas of Jewish Identity and posed questions such as "What makes a person culturally Jewish?" and "What does a Jew look like?" There were also many drawings and a few videos exploring the idea of identity. Maya, who acted in each video was able to play extremely different characters in these videos from an orthodox Jewish women to a perhaps lest modest Hispanic club girl.

Though these videos dealt with issues relating to stereotypes, what I found perhaps more interesting yet disappointing were some of the comments that these videos received. Some were extremely aggressive and racist while others were very complimentary and funny. I guess what I am trying to say is that, there will always be people out there hating, there will always be someone who thinks that you are wrong and that they are right and unfortunately most of these people will never be willing to listen to your side let alone to reason.

Without getting to personal here, I understood most of these questions and had thought about them many times myself. Some I can answer while others I am still questioning and trying to figure out. I decided to e-mail Maya, if only to say hi, give her some feedback on her site and let her know that it meant something to me. I don't know if I was actually expecting to receive a response but this morning when I checked my e-mail there it was. At first I thought it was merely a 3D model file that I had made using the program Maya but instead it was an e-mail, yes an e-mail from Maya herself. Ok, so I’m not sure why I was so happy to actually hear back from her, maybe it had something to do with the fact that when you google her name something actually come up… who knows.

Oh yeh, how about those shomer nagiah panties? To some they are probably pretty offensive but seriously... They're just really funny! and for those of you who don't get them just have a look here, panties.

Interactive Discovery.

Over the past week I have had time to think and try to hone in on the concept that I plan to base my project on. Originally I was toying with the idea of having different personalities, those online and those offline. However I felt that this was perhaps a bit too obvious a take on the theme 'identity'. Considering how best I could explore the theme identity led me to a concept that will grow as ones identity grows.

Identity is a process, one has to build and form their own and individual identity over time. Each identity is unique as a result of who they are, where they are from, what they have done in their life, their religion, their culture, their political views and all of those other factors that in some way contribute to who they are. It is with this notion of exploration that I wish to build my project.

What I am proposing here is that I will create an interactive website that will give people the opportunity to explore who they are. They may have an idea of who they are, they believe in this religion and they were born in that country though do they really know what that means? are they actually are of the beliefs and practices of the religion to which they adhere?

Perhaps this website can be truly interactive, in that it will allow discussion between people from different cultures and different societies, it will be a melting pot in which people can talk freely about who they are while exploring and ultimately discovering who they really are, and perhaps learn something about someone else and their culture at the same time.

Obviously this is only the beginning, and hopefully it will evolve as I wish the identity of the site to evolve.

How Many Identities Makes an Identity?

I've been thinking about different takes on the theme 'identity' and how best to portray a message through an online website. Would it be safest to stay close to home and consider digital identity or as it is also referred to Identity 2.0 or perhaps steer clear from the digital spectrum and consider what makes a persons identity. I could consider what forms a persons identity, whether it is their religion, their culture, their politics or perhaps the country from which they are from. Playing with this idea, we could return to the digital forum and discuss whether these non-digital identities change once a person starts gaining an online presence. Whether these people develop other 'online' identities which in turn affects their 'off line' identity.

Could this concept be considered similar to Schizophrenia or other multiple personality disorders. Is 'disorder' even the right word to use in this context, I mean is it really wrong to have one identity in the 'real' world and another identity that is perhaps separate from your 'natural' one. Though with the creation of all of these identities where is the end? when does one person stop creating new personalities and says that this is him, that he is X made up of X, Y and Z? Ultimately, to the individual who consciously has these other personalities they are all a part of him though to everyone else who is perhaps ignorant of these other personalities he is to them many different people which in itself is a dangerous thought with endless possibilities.

Here is a video that is an excellent explanation of Identity 2.0:

Baudrillard - Post Modern thoughts.

What is the difference between art and design?

In this post I will continue with my musings on this question and try to come a tiny bit closer to understanding what both words are really on about, if they are the same thing and if not then what do they mean?

During class last week we were given a chance to express our thoughts in response to the question that was posed the week before, ‘Is there a difference between art and design? And if so what is it?’ Now, you can see that I have written considerably on my thoughts regarding this issue but perhaps it is worth my while to discuss a few of the ideas that were suggested in class.

The discussion in class was geared in the direction that there is an inherent difference between the two, though quite clearly in my writings I believe that they both work together complimenting each other in synergy. Though I have just suggested that they both are very similar if not the same I realize that it is really open to personal interpretation, as are most things.

One notion that was suggested in class was that the definition of ‘what is art?’ is dependent upon the society in which we live. What has existed previously and was not considered art could perhaps in today’s society be considered art. ‘What is art?’ is strongly dictated by the culture and politics of the society in which we live.

It is quite a challenging question, one that is no doubt open to many answers. Ultimately, it is up to the individual to interpret each word as they like. Yes, there are common understandings of each word though even with these one can take them and read them, as they themselves understand them, in some respects a stage in the process of Baurillards Simulacrum and similarly in Saussurean semiotics.

www.oculart.com

Art evokes a response,

Design is an intent to evoke the response,

The website that I have chosen to write about is www.oculart.com At first this website appears to be merely a gallery of a persons artistic creations that are accompanied by an eerie digital soundtrack. After playing around with the site it becomes clear that when one enlarges and decreases the windows size the images change. Specific elements stay where they are while others move around which in turn change the artwork. This work is based around fundamental Flash design rules. A person has thought about what they want to achieve and used the appropriate tools to achieve this. The works evoke a response from the audience, be that annoyance from the audio files or fascination by the forever changing patterns and invigorating colors.

So, in keeping with the question, I feel that this project was only achievable by having a design intent which specified something along the lines that they wanted 'moving colorful patterns to change as the viewer changes the window size'. Though with saying that, the artist would also have had to pay special attention to the colors, how they compliment each other or don’t and how to best evoke a response.

Is there a Difference? Art and Design.

Since our last lesson I’ve been thinking about the question posed to us;

‘Is there a difference between Art and Design? and if so, what is it?’

Before I did any research into these areas I must admit that I was pretty confused. I studied Visual Arts throughout school and therefore had a decent understanding of various theoretical schools of thought and an appreciation for the conceptual framework of art. Though when the question was put to me and I was given a chance to rationalise and use my own logic to answer this question I found myself constantly posing new questions and what ifs?

Britannica Online defines art as "the use of skill and imagination in the creation of aesthetic objects, environments, or experiences that can be shared with others."

Ok, so now that we know that art ‘is a creation that can be shared with others’, the question now is, how is this art shared? Is it viewed as a painting on a wall, a sculpture in a museum, a gothic cathedral, read as poetry in a book or perhaps listened to live from an orchestra? I would suggest all three and more.

Now we come to the second part of the question, what is design? The general understanding of design is the conscious effort to create something that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Though what if ones design brief specifies the exact opposite? One would need to respond to the brief and in doing so create something that is ugly and doesn’t work.

I will now write my thoughts and work through my questions as I go along. Design has an initial intent, perhaps a problem and a brief, there is a desire to reach a specific goal while with art one works towards a finished work that conveys a message or feeling to the audience.

Can a person design a piece of art? Or can a piece of art be a design? Yes I believe both can be true. An architect designs a building, he has studied for many years to understand what will stand and what will fall, what will look good and what will look bad, what will be comfortable and what will be uncomfortable and to put it simply what will work and what won’t. He draws on this knowledge to design a building that potentially will be viewed as a work of art today or in the future.

The second question that I posed for myself was ‘can a piece of art be a design?’ this too is true, to give an example, the artist Dale Chihuly paints and draws free flowing works that many people would be more than happy to frame, though Chihuly uses these works as inspiration for his glass designs. These large glass forms have a science of structural physics behind them, what is the maximum bending moment allowed for a cantilevering arm? What temperature must the glass be melted to be blown? You may say that the drawings are merely plans for a finished product, though somehow they are reminiscent to Jackson Pollock’s works. It appears that he throws paint without thought onto a canvas though he has an understanding of the rules of composition and knows what he is trying to achieve.

Am I merely making this whole topic more confusing? Should I have just said that they were both different and kept it simple and sweet? I won’t say that they are both the same and totally interchangeable though I won’t say that they are different either. I feel that often one can lead to the other and that sometimes they can be one and the same, though ultimately a design can be art and art can be a design.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://gdsigns.blogspot.com/2008/08/is-there-difference-art-and-design.html' title='Is there a Difference? I’m not going to go on listing more sites for if you want to have a look go and have a look, they are all there on his site.

The next site that we were introduced to was http://box.net/ This site allows us to view documents that our teacher puts up, i.e. project outlines or tutorials.

One last website that he showed us was http://werbach.com/barebones/ The Bare Bones Guide to HTML. Well, it's not exactly my first post ever for I've posted under other peoples' youtube videos and I've written on friends facebook walls though this is my first post on my own blog, www.gdsigns.blogspot.com

Let me begin by introducing myself and in turn my blog. My name is Guy Daniel Steiner which helps explain the title of this blog, GDSigns. I am studying Architecture at the University of Sydney and am making this blog as part of an elective that I am taking, Web Art and Design.

Being my first post I wish to begin with an analogy that will hopefully set these posts in motion, "A blog should be like a women's skirt, long enough to cover the subject but short enough to stimulate interest". So there you have it, my first post - nice and simple... for now at least.
